A Project Director is required to lead the delivery of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) as part of a growing portfolio of renewable energy assets. This will require significant project management experience, including that of BESS, to ensure successful delivery of not only this first project, but subsequent projects which will include further BESS projects but also likely solar farms, although other asset types are being considered in the development pipeline.

The growth is driven by the acquisition of projects under development, as well as by the addition of BESSs to their existing solar farms. There is also greenfield development.

The business is the Australian operations of a large, listed company pursuing a technology driven decarbonization strategy that focuses on investments in renewable energy assets and new energy technologies, trading and supply of energy as well as demand and portfolio management solutions.

The Australian business has an ambitious growth target with an active buy and build strategy, which includes development of projects in solar, battery and pumped hydro energy storage as well as the acquisition of existing renewable energy generation and storage assets. They are currently trading and have recently been granted an electricity retail license for C&I customers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Set up project governance systems and processes to manage project tasks and timeframes of project teams, external consultants & contractors.
  • Participate in pre-contracts, commercial and procurement activities for BESS projects, including EPC RFPs, tender management, technical specification negotiations, scope definition and head terms.
  • Manage the design and execution of all project packages including engineering, civil, mechanical, electrical, commissioning, SCADA and ancillary services.
  • Ensure adherence to project implementation plans, identify issues & bottlenecks, and mitigate impact of project challenges.
  • Lead end-to-end project delivery including setting up multidisciplinary project teams, onboarding & managing contractors, owner’s engineers, NSPs, government authorities, suppliers and 3rd party consultants via active contract management.
  • Oversee all construction management activities including progress monitoring, planning & reporting, CAPEX budget control.
  • Ensure integration of project & contract management to ensure cohesive project delivery according to contractual terms.
  • Deliver stakeholder engagement, communication and negotiation with government and company stakeholders to reach grid compliance, capacity levels and availability requirements up to provisional acceptance and hand over.

 Requirements

  • A relevant qualification in a technical, engineering or project management.
  • Substantial previous experience in project management for the construction of renewable energy and electrical infrastructure assets, including battery energy storage assets (BESS).
  • Advanced project management skills, preferably with pre-contracts involvement.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Adept at problem identification and resolution.
  • Experience with project management related tools.
  • Experience with HSEQ, risk management and contract management.
  • An understanding of energy use and energy markets in Australia.
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills.
  • Proactive with high levels of initiative.
  • Collaborative team player.
  • Current driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and interstate.
  • Australian citizen or permanent resident.
